Umlani Bushcamp
Back-to-basics bush elegance in the Timbavati — no electricity, no WiFi, pure safari
About Umlani Bushcamp
Umlani Bushcamp is a beautifully rustic tented camp in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve that strips away modern distractions to deliver an authentic, immersive bush experience. There is no electricity from the grid, no WiFi, and no cell phone reception — just paraffin lanterns, candles, and the sounds of the African night.
Eight traditional reed-and-thatch huts with canvas sides are set along a dry riverbed, each with an outdoor shower and a basic but comfortable interior. The camp is unfenced, so wildlife — from hyenas to elephants — occasionally wanders through camp. This is not luxury in the conventional sense, but it is safari at its most genuine.
What Umlani lacks in modern amenities, it more than compensates for with exceptional guiding. The rangers here are among the most experienced in the Timbavati, and the camp’s emphasis on walking safaris provides a ground-level connection to the bush that vehicle-only lodges cannot match. Game drives in open Land Rovers complement the walks, and night drives reveal a whole different cast of characters.
Despite the rustic setting, the food is outstanding — hearty bush cuisine prepared over open flames and served under the stars. Umlani proves that the most memorable safari experiences don’t require air conditioning and marble bathrooms.
