Tamboti Tented Camp
Semi-luxury tented camp near Orpen Gate — an affordable taste of tented safari in predator country
About Tamboti Tented Camp
Tamboti Tented Camp offers a step up from basic camping in a beautiful setting on the banks of the Timbavati River, just a few kilometres from Orpen Gate in central Kruger. The camp provides an affordable tented safari experience — not quite the luxury of a private reserve, but far more atmospheric than a standard rest camp bungalow.
Forty semi-permanent safari tents are set on wooden decks among large tambooti and jackalberry trees along the river. Each tent has two single beds, a fan, and basic furniture. Ablution facilities are communal but well-maintained. The camp has a small communal kitchen with braai facilities but no restaurant or shop — self-catering is essential.
Tamboti’s location in central Kruger’s predator grasslands is its greatest asset. The same lion-rich territory that surrounds Satara extends to Tamboti, and the early morning drive from camp towards Satara regularly produces big cat sightings. The Timbavati River also attracts elephant, buffalo, and a variety of antelope species.
For budget-conscious visitors who want more than a camping pitch but less than a full lodge experience, Tamboti hits a sweet spot — tented atmosphere, excellent wildlife, and SANParks pricing.
