Balule Camp
Kruger's most basic camp — no electricity, no frills, just you and the Olifants River
About Balule Camp
Balule Camp is Kruger’s most stripped-back accommodation option — a tiny, unfenced satellite camp perched on the south bank of the Olifants River with no electricity, no shop, and no restaurant. For bush purists, it is absolute paradise.
The camp has just six three-bed rondavels and 15 camping sites, all without power. Lighting is by gas lamp, cooking by gas stove or braai, and the communal ablutions have cold water only. A small communal area overlooking the Olifants River is the camp’s social hub, where guests gather at dusk to watch hippo and crocodile in the river below.
What Balule lacks in facilities it compensates for in atmosphere and location. The Olifants River is one of Kruger’s most productive game-viewing corridors, and the camp’s position on the river provides constant wildlife entertainment. Elephant herds cross the river, hippo pods wallow in the remaining pools, and the calls of fish eagles and hyena fill the night air.
Balule is the antithesis of luxury safari — and many guests wouldn’t have it any other way. It is one of the last places in Kruger where you can experience the bush exactly as early visitors did, with nothing between you and the wild except a thin canvas wall and a gas lantern.
