Kapama River Lodge

Kapama River Lodge is the flagship property of the Kapama Private Game Reserve, one of the largest privately owned Big Five reserves near Kruger National Park. The lodge welcomes families with children of all ages, making it one of the most accessible luxury safari options in the Greater Kruger area.

Sixty-four air-conditioned suites are set in lush gardens along the Kapama River, each with en-suite bathrooms, private patios, and modern amenities. The lodge’s scale allows it to offer facilities rarely found at smaller safari camps, including a large swimming pool, fully equipped spa, gym, curio shop, and multiple dining areas.

Game drives on Kapama’s 13,000-hectare reserve encounter all of the Big Five regularly, along with cheetah, wild dog, giraffe, zebra, and over 350 bird species. The reserve also houses the Kapama Cheetah Foundation, which guests can visit to learn about cheetah conservation. Elephant-back safaris, which were once offered, have been replaced with elephant interaction experiences that prioritise animal welfare.

All meals and game activities are included. The lodge caters well to families, with dedicated children’s menus, a kids’ activity programme, and family-friendly game drives at adjusted times.

Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport is 20 minutes away. Kapama has its own airstrip for charter flights. By road from Johannesburg, allow 5 hours via the R36.
