Shimuwini Bush Camp
Hidden gem overlooking Shimuwini Dam — exceptional birding and elephant viewing in northern Kruger
About Shimuwini Bush Camp
Shimuwini Bush Camp is a small, secluded camp overlooking Shimuwini Dam on the Letaba River in northern Kruger. The dam is the camp’s centrepiece — a reliable water source that draws large herds of elephant, pods of hippo, and an extraordinary diversity of waterbirds throughout the year.
With just 15 cottages arranged along the dam wall, Shimuwini offers front-row seats to a constantly changing wildlife spectacle. Elephant herds regularly number 50 or more animals, and the dam attracts fish eagles, goliath herons, saddle-billed storks, and dozens of other species that make this one of the finest birding locations in Kruger.
The camp is fully self-catering — bring all provisions as there is no shop or restaurant. Cottages have air conditioning, en-suite bathrooms, kitchenettes, and braai areas with views over the dam. The communal hide overlooking the water is a highlight for patient observers.
Shimuwini suits visitors who appreciate quiet observation over constant driving. Many guests spend hours at the dam hide, watching elephants bathe, hippos surface, and raptors hunt — an unhurried, meditative experience that represents Kruger at its finest.
