Punda Maria Rest Camp
Kruger's northernmost camp — a birdwatcher's paradise in the botanical garden of the park
About Punda Maria Rest Camp
Punda Maria is the northernmost rest camp in Kruger National Park, set in the Sandveld region often described as the “botanical garden of Kruger.” The lush vegetation in and around the camp attracts a remarkable diversity of bird species, including several that are found nowhere else in the park — making Punda Maria a pilgrimage site for serious birdwatchers.
The camp is the gateway to the Pafuri region, where the Luvuvhu and Limpopo rivers meet at Kruger’s northernmost point. This area is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in the park, with over 350 bird species recorded — including the elusive Pel’s fishing owl. The drive north from Punda Maria passes through hauntingly beautiful landscapes of ancient baobabs and fever tree forests.
The camp has a peaceful, village-like atmosphere with bungalows, safari tents, and camping facilities set among indigenous gardens. A small shop, take-away outlet, and petrol station serve basic needs. The camp’s birding hides are among the most productive in Kruger.
