About Skukuza Rest Camp

Skukuza Rest Camp is the largest and most well-equipped rest camp in Kruger National Park, serving as both the park’s administrative headquarters and its most popular overnight destination.

Situated on the southern bank of the Sabie River, approximately 12 kilometres from Phabeni Gate, Skukuza has been welcoming visitors since 1936 and today accommodates up to 1,000 guests across a wide range of accommodation types.

The camp occupies a prime location in southern Kruger, one of the most wildlife-rich sections of the park. The Sabie River corridor running past the camp is widely regarded as one of the best leopard-viewing areas in Africa, and the roads radiating out from Skukuza consistently produce sightings of all the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino.

Skukuza’s facilities are unmatched by any other camp in Kruger. The camp has three swimming pools, multiple dining options including the Cattle Baron restaurant and a self-service cafeteria overlooking the river, a well-stocked shop with groceries and curios, an ATM, a petrol station, a doctor’s surgery, a laundromat, and an information centre.

The camp also features a nine-hole golf course; one of the few unfenced courses in the world, where impala and warthog share the fairways with golfers.

Accommodation ranges from basic camping and caravan sites to two-bed safari tents, rondavels, family bungalows, and air-conditioned guest cottages. The newer Skukuza Safari Lodge offers 128 modern rooms including family and accessible units.

The camp’s riverside setting is one of its greatest assets. The viewing deck at the Cattle Baron restaurant overlooks hippo pods, crocodiles, and waterbirds. In the early morning, elephant herds often cross the river within sight of camp.

Skukuza Airport receives daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, making it possible to be on a game drive within an hour of landing. For first-time Kruger visitors, families, and those who value convenience, Skukuza remains the definitive Kruger rest camp.
