MalaMala Game Reserve

MalaMala Game Reserve holds the distinction of being the largest private Big Five game reserve in South Africa, with 13,300 hectares of exclusive traversing rights along a 20-kilometre stretch of the Sand River in the Sabi Sand. No other vehicles from neighbouring lodges operate on MalaMala’s concession, giving guests an unparalleled sense of space and exclusivity.

The reserve has been in operation since 1964 and has built a formidable reputation for consistent, high-quality wildlife encounters. The Sand River frontage attracts extraordinary concentrations of game — leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo, and rhino are seen with remarkable regularity, and MalaMala’s sighting records are among the most impressive of any private reserve in Africa.

Three camps serve different needs: Main Camp offers classic, comfortable safari accommodation for up to 50 guests; Sable Camp is smaller and more intimate with just seven suites; and Rattray’s on MalaMala is the ultra-luxury option with eight individually designed suites, each with a private pool and dedicated butler service.

All three camps include twice-daily game drives in open Land Rovers, guided walks, and all meals and drinks. The guiding team is exceptional — many MalaMala rangers have decades of experience in the reserve and an intimate knowledge of individual animals and their territories.

Fly into Skukuza Airport or KMIA. MalaMala has its own private airstrip receiving daily scheduled flights and charters from Johannesburg. Road transfers from Skukuza take approximately 45 minutes.
