Even if you're based at Satara, the drive north to Olifants rest camp is worth it just for the view from the restaurant. The camp sits on a cliff above the Olifants River. Hippos, crocodiles, and elephants below you while you eat. Take gravel back roads on the way for better game viewing.
Orpen is far less busy than the southern gates. You'll sometimes see elephant or leopard before you've even reached the entrance boom. From Orpen, Satara is about an hour's drive through productive game country.
