Singita Ebony Lodge
Classic Singita elegance in the Sabi Sand — Out of Africa romance with world-class guiding
Hazyview is one of the most practical and convenient places to stay when visiting Kruger National Park — especially if you want a balance between safari and comfort.
It’s not a bush experience in the traditional sense. It’s a working town.
But that’s exactly why it works so well.
Hazyview is the most convenient base for visiting southern Kruger if you want easy access to the park along with full town amenities like supermarkets, restaurants, and fuel stations.
This guide will help you decide if Hazyview is the right base for your trip — and what it’s actually like to stay here.
Hazyview is not inside Kruger, and it’s not a wildlife conservancy like Marloth Park.
It’s a small, functional town just outside the park.
You’ll find:
Hazyview is a fully serviced town, which makes it one of the easiest places to base yourself for a Kruger safari.
But it’s important to be clear:
You won’t have animals walking past your accommodation.
And you’ll need to drive into the park each day.
This is where Hazyview really stands out.
Phabeni Gate
Paul Kruger Gate
Numbi Gate
Phabeni Gate is the most practical entry point from Hazyview, offering quick access to the southern Kruger game-rich areas.
This makes early morning drives much easier compared to staying further away.
Staying in Hazyview means you’ll be doing day trips into Kruger.
A typical day looks like:
Hazyview works best for travellers who don’t mind driving daily in exchange for comfort, flexibility, and access to amenities.
This setup suits many travellers — but not all.
One of Hazyview’s biggest strengths is its location.
It sits right next to the Panorama Route, one of South Africa’s most scenic drives.
Key highlights nearby:
Hazyview is one of the best bases if you want to combine a Kruger safari with the Panorama Route in the same trip.
This is something you can’t easily do from inside the park.
This is where Hazyview outperforms staying inside Kruger.
You have access to:
Hazyview offers a level of convenience that you simply don’t get inside Kruger National Park.
For families or longer stays, this makes a big difference.
Hazyview has a wide range of accommodation options.
You’ll find:
Hazyview offers more accommodation variety and generally better value compared to staying inside Kruger.
This makes it a strong option for budget-conscious travellers.
Hazyview suits a very specific type of traveller.
Let’s be honest — Hazyview isn’t for everyone.
Hazyview is a practical base — not a wilderness experience.
Hazyview is the best choice if convenience and accessibility matter more than immersion.
Planning matters when staying outside the park.
Tips:
Staying in Hazyview requires more planning, but gives you greater flexibility in how you structure your days.
Hazyview is one of the easiest and most accessible areas to navigate when visiting Kruger.
Yes — for the right type of traveller.
Hazyview is one of the most convenient and practical bases for visiting Kruger National Park, especially for self-drive travellers who want comfort, flexibility, and access to nearby attractions.
It’s not about immersion.
It’s about making your trip easier.
And for many travellers — that’s exactly what matters most.
No wildlife within Hazyview itself (it's a working town). But Phabeni Gate is under 15 minutes away, giving direct access to southern Kruger's Big Five territory. Local activity providers offer elephant interactions, reptile parks, and horse safaris outside the park.
Local Knowledge
Most Hazyview visitors default to Paul Kruger Gate because it's the most famous. Phabeni is closer, newer, and almost always has shorter queues. It puts you on the same roads inside the park. Save Paul Kruger Gate for a day when you want to head straight to Skukuza.
Hazyview has two shopping centres with Pick n Pay and Spar, plus a Fruit & Veg City. Park shop prices are significantly higher and the selection is limited. Buy your braai meat, drinks, snacks, and ice in town the evening before your game drive.
Hazyview is the only base that puts you within easy reach of both Kruger and the Panorama Route (God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes, Three Rondavels, Blyde River Canyon). Alternate Kruger days with Panorama days and you get two completely different experiences from one base.
Roads around Hazyview are generally tarred but can be uneven, and other drivers don't always follow the rules. Drive carefully, especially at night. Take out full insurance on your rental car. Inside the park is actually safer driving than outside it.
Staying in Hazyview means shops, restaurants, ATMs, and reliable connectivity. But you won't fall asleep to hyena calls or wake up to kudu outside your window. If the bush atmosphere matters to you, consider Marloth Park or staying inside the park instead. If convenience and flexibility matter more, Hazyview is hard to beat.
