Kruger Shalati – Train on the Bridge
Sleep in a luxury train carriage permanently stationed on a bridge above the Sabie River
About Kruger Shalati – Train on the Bridge
Kruger Shalati is one of the most unique accommodation concepts in Africa — a luxury hotel housed in beautifully refurbished vintage train carriages permanently stationed on the historic Selati Bridge, suspended above the Sabie River near Skukuza Rest Camp in the heart of Kruger National Park.
The concept pays homage to the early days of Kruger tourism, when visitors would arrive by train and sleep in the carriages on the bridge, waking to the sights and sounds of the African bush from their windows. Today, 31 luxuriously appointed rooms — including 24 Train rooms on the bridge and 7 Bridge House rooms alongside it — offer a one-of-a-kind experience that blends railway heritage with five-star comfort.
Each Train room features large windows framing the river below, where hippo, crocodile, and elephant are frequent visitors. The interiors blend mid-century design with African touches. The Bridge House rooms offer a more spacious, contemporary option with private decks.
A cantilevered pool extends out from the bridge over the river — one of the most photographed hotel pools in the world. The restaurant, bar, and communal spaces are housed in refurbished train carriages, creating a dining experience unlike any other in Kruger.
Guests can join guided game drives into the surrounding Kruger bush, walking safaris along the river, and sunset experiences on the bridge. Being adjacent to Skukuza, there is also easy access to self-drive routes on Kruger’s most productive roads.
